Question: What is the impact of urban livability challenges on your city community?

Greater Philadelphia demonstrates how urban livability is shaped by multiple systems operating at the same time. Transportation, aging infrastructure, housing affordability, economic opportunity, environmental resilience, safety, education, public space, and access to resources all influence people’s daily experiences.

One of the most important lessons from CityLab is that these challenges are interconnected. Transportation affects access to employment. Infrastructure influences safety and mobility. Parks and public spaces influence health, recreation, belonging, and community identity. Economic development can create opportunity while also increasing concerns about affordability and displacement.

The Philadelphia region also shows that geographic proximity does not necessarily mean equal access to opportunity. Experiences can vary significantly among neighborhoods and between the city and surrounding communities. Livability therefore cannot simply be measured by whether Philadelphia has transportation, parks, jobs, businesses, or public infrastructure. The more important question is who can actually access and benefit from those systems.
