2. CityLab Strategies: Emerging Solutions

Question: What is the impact of urban livability strategies and solutions operating in your city community?

Greater Philadelphia provides many opportunities to see placemaking and urban innovation in practice. Waterfront redevelopment, parks, trails, public spaces, transportation improvements, mixed-use development, neighborhood revitalization, arts and culture, and environmental initiatives can reconnect communities and improve quality of life.

The Delaware River waterfront is particularly meaningful to my CityLab experience. Philadelphia developed because of its relationship with the river, yet transportation and industrial infrastructure also created physical separation between communities and the waterfront. Current efforts to reconnect people with the river demonstrate how infrastructure and public space can be reconsidered.

However, CityLab has also taught me that redevelopment should not automatically be considered successful simply because a space looks better or attracts investment. Regenerative and creative placemaking should consider existing neighborhoods, culture, environmental sustainability, participation, economic opportunity, and equity. The real measure of success is whether improvements create lasting value with communities rather than simply for them.
