Question: How are urban livability challenges relevant to your job, your business/professional sector, and your future?

Urban livability challenges are highly relevant to my professional work because both cities and complex engineering programs operate as interconnected systems. In my career in aerospace and defense, I work in environments where people, infrastructure, technology, resources, safety, cost, schedules, and long-term decisions are constantly interacting. CityLab has helped me recognize that the same systems-thinking approach can be applied to cities, but it has also challenged me to expand how I define whether a system is actually successful.

One of my biggest takeaways is that a system can technically function and still fail the people it is supposed to serve. A transportation system can operate but still leave communities disconnected. Infrastructure can meet technical requirements while creating barriers to accessibility. Likewise, a business or engineering program can meet its performance requirements while overlooking the experiences of the people who operate, maintain, or depend on it.

For my professional future, urban livability reinforces the importance of looking beyond individual requirements and understanding the entire ecosystem surrounding a problem. As I continue developing as a leader, I want to evaluate success not only through cost, schedule, and technical performance, but also through sustainability, stakeholder trust, accessibility, resilience, and long-term human impact.
